Blue Jean Country Queen & Meath Macra Go Hollywood This March

For the last two years, a number of Meath Macra na Feirme clubs and Athboy community groups get to let loose their creative side and try their hand at creating their own Hollywood epics in the hopes of winning a cash prize and the coveted Best Film Award at the Blue Jean Country Queen Festival/Meath Macra na Feirme Night At The Oscars..


The 2018 A Night At The Oscars fundraiser will take place from 7.30pm on 3rd March 2018 in the Darnley Lodge Hotel, Athboy. Meath Macra and the Blue Jean Country Queen Festival would like to invite Macra clubs and Athboy commuinity groups to enter their home made blockbusters by the 16 February 2018. Then get ready for a gala night of movie premieres in the Darnley Lodge Hotel where all entries will be screened before a live audience and a panel of judges.

Athboy Fair Green High Nelly Club were the last Best Picture Winners with their tale of “Robin Hood and Tudy Glenn”. Previous entries have included mashups of Longwood/Kilyon Macra’s “Crimebuster’s Taken, Seriously” (a mash up of the Liam Neeson film Taken and the D’Unbelievable’s Crimebuster sketch), Athboy Macra na Feirme’s James Bond parody “Blue Jeans Are Forever” and Moynalty Macra’s explosive A-Team parody “The B-Team”.


This year’s judges will include returning judge Degnan Geraghty, an Athboy based actor who will have been most recently seen in the televsion series Vikings and award winning filmmaker and videographer, Shay Casserley. The complete judging panel will be announced in the coming week

Money raised goes towards the running of The Blue Jean Country Queen Festival, with a portion of proceeds going to Meath Macra na Feirme. Tickets are €15 (€10 for Macra members and children). For more information see our Facebook event page.


Clubs and community groups are asked to submit a short film to be screened at on 3rd March 2018 in the Darnley Lodge Hotel, Athboy. This short film can take the form of a direct re-enactment of a scene film or TV show. You can also adapt/parody your chosen film to put your own spin on it! For inspiration why not check out the Blue Jean Country Queen Festival YouTube and Facebook pages for examples of previous entries.

Entry fee for films: €50

Films must be between 3-5mins in lenght.

What do you need to do?

  • Pick the film or scene you wish to parody.

  • Write a short script. You can adapt scripts directly from what your parodying and change lines to suit you or write your own dialogue.

  • Gather your costumes, cast and get filming! If you need any help with let us know

  • Send us the film by the 16 February. They can be handed in on a USB key as a Google Drive or Dropbox upload or sent via to

Some Tips for your film:

  • One page of dialogue should amount to minute of screen time.

  • Keep an eye on lighting and an ear on sound quality. Make sure your actors can be heard (and seen) on screen!

  • Keep your dialogue family friendly – This is a family event and there might be kids watching!

  • If there’s anything you’re not sure of please let us know.

All films will be screened as part of the Blue Jean Country Queen Festival/Meath Macra na Feirme A Night At The Oscars event on 3rd March 2018 in The Darnley Lodge Hotel, Athboy.

After each screening a panel of judges will give their opinions and scores for the films out of 10.

Once all films have been shown the audience will be given the chance to purchase a vote for their favorite film.

Audience votes combined with the judges scores are then calculated to find out who won the Best Picture Award. All other awards are given out based on the judges recommendations.

These rules are subject to review and amendment by the organizers.
